If you are a parent today, there is a good chance you didn’t spend your entire childhood playing video games and watching TV. In all likelihood, the majority of your time away from school was spent outside doing rambunctious activities and even when it rained, you weren’t glued to a screen. Instead, you actually used that little brain on yours a found ways to have fun. You pushed your creativity and got smarter without even thinking about it.
We all want our kids to experience the similar joys that we had growing up. That’s why we created a list of toys that will serve at least one or more of these four purposes:
#1: Keep them away from the TV or Tablet
#2: Get them outside
#3: Push them to start thinking creatively
#4: Put you into nostalgia overload
Check out our list below of amazing kids gifts that are sure to send you back a few decades.
Razor Deltawing
Growing up many of us started out on a tricycle. It was a fair compromise as it allowed us to ease into wheeled movement but with the safety of three wheels. However, these kids today like to push the limits. The Detlawing offers the safety of three wheels, but the speed those daredevils need and crave. Just make sure they wear their helmet.
Kidizoom Action Camera
To go wth their daredevil stunts on the scooter, someone needs to capture it all on film. Instead of breaking the bank with a $500 GoPro, the Kidizoom Action Camera offers your kids with a chance to film their “stunts” as well as take photos on the fly. This is also a perfect camera for parents who are worried about their kids breaking a more fragile digital camera.
Sky Viper Nano Drone
Some of us were lucky enough to have remote control cars when we were young. We were fairly grounded in our pursuits but always had big dreams of setting our sights to the sky. With drone technology getting better by the day, there a more and more options available for flight enthusiasts. With the Sky Viper Nano Drone, you get a smaller cost effective drone that will immerse you kid into the world of remote control toys. With a smaller size and price tag, you won’t have to worry about spending $1200 on a high-end drone, only to find out your kid isn’t a very good pilot. And if they lose interest, it’s always there for you to play around with.
Lite-Brite Magic Screen
I think most people had a chance to dabble with a lite-brite back in the day. Hours could be spent finding the right colors to make a sunset, only to realize you don’t have enough yellow pegs – and heaven forbid, you put a peg into the wrong hole! Let your kids experience this immersive little art project but in a much more portable form.
Lego Set
The classic of all classics. What better way to kill a raining afternoon than playing with Legos. I personally spent hours upon hours lost in my box full of lego pieces trying to create whatever came to mind. For the most enjoyable experience: buy multiple sets, throw out the instructions, and let your kid’s imaginations run wild. Just be careful you don’t step on any pieces.
Exploding Kittens
It takes a lot to get a young kids attention these days. If you can manage to pry them away from their Ipad, you’ll be lucky to hold their attention for more than 10 minutes. So good luck trying to get them to play board game like Clue, Life, or Monopoly. Save the classics for a later day. Instead, get EXPLODING KITTENS. The game was made by the same creative minds over at the oatmeal. So I will let them explain the concept.
“Exploding Kittens is a card game for people who are into kittens and explosions and laser beams and sometimes goats.”
“In this highly-strategic, kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette, players draw cards until someone draws an Exploding Kitten, at which point they explode, they are dead, and they are out of the game — unless that player has a Defuse card, which can defuse the Kitten using things like laser pointers, belly rubs, and catnip sandwiches. All of the other cards in the deck are used to move, mitigate, or avoid the Exploding Kittens.”
Pie Face Showdown
A lot of you have probably seen this game played in a video that went viral this past year. A grandfather and grandson squared off in the ultimate game of Russian roulette. But with far funnier consequences. Here’s a chance for kids to finally get back at their parents and vice-versa.
Harry Potter & The Cursed Child
The Harry Potter series is one the greatest adventures to hit the book shelf and box office. Many parents today are looking for books that carry on from such a memorable book series. Well, they are in luck. With Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, your kids can continue the adventure. While you’re at it, you might as well get them the whole series.
Hatchimals
The last on the list is a true shot of nostalgia. Who here remembers the Tamagotchi? I think we all do. If you never got the chance, I’m sorry you missed out on such a life changing experience. A recent study was done last year in which they surveyed people who owned Tamagotchi’s growing up. Those who took a good care of their pets actually ended up becoming better parents. Just kidding! But I’m sure if such a study existed, the results would be very telling.
I’m just joking. But I’m sure if such a study existed, the results wouldn’t be far off.
Anywho, in an ironic twist of fate, the 2016 version of Tamagotchi is not from a computer, it’s a toy that hatches from a physical egg. Get your kid a Hatchimal today and ensure they one day become a good parent, just like you 😉
That’s our list of kids gifts for nostalgic parents. Do you think we missed anything?
